How do we take care of our gemstones?

Physical care

Talking about stones (or gemstones as we prefer to say), we may be tempted to think that they have high resistance and that nothing can affect their integrity.

It’s true that they are strong and they can travel the years, but when they are part of a piece of jewelry, they are not indestructible.

To maintain the beauty and sparkle of your stones jewelry, you have to treat them with care.

Make sure to wipe off any trace of makeup from your gemstone jewelry when you remove them after use. A soft pure cotton cloth is the best choice for wiping such jewelry.

Direct sunlight can fade a lot of stones, including Amethysts and Rose Quartz. That’s why you shouldn’t wear jewelry under direct sunlight for an extended period of time.

If you love swimming, make sure that you remove your jewelry before diving into a swimming pool. The chlorinated water can do much damage to the stones and their decorative metallic elements.

When traveling, do not carry your gemstones in a single box or pouch. Always carry them in separate cases or at least keep them wrapped separately in cotton tissues.

Energetically Cleaning and Purification

Any gemstone travels through a long chain of human contact from the time it is mined, cut, polished, handled by sales person to the jewelry manufacturer, made into a bracelet or other forms of jewelry, handled to prospective customers, till the person destined to wear it comes into possession of the Gemstone.

The Gemstone must be cleansed and purified of the energies that have been passed onto it even if briefly by the people who have come into physical contact of the Gemstone till this point.

I know there are many who recommend to clean and purify the gemstones with salt or salted water. We don’t think that this is a proper method to clean your jewelry. A stone placed in salt will become dull in time, will lose its sparkle and will slightly change its vibration.

A piece of jewelry cleaned with salt will damage not only the stones, but also the wire on which it is worked and the decorative elements of silver or base metal/stainless steel.

You can choose form our next proposals for purifying and charging your piece of jewel.

  • Wash the crystal with running water if the material it’s made out of allows it. You can imagine that the flow of water from the faucet is a waterfall that washes your crystal deeply and as the water runs off, the energies embedded in the crystal disappear. You decide whether to let the jet flow smoothly, like a spring, or more intensely, like a waterfall, depending on your nature: more yin (calm, tranquil) or more yang (energetic, active). Water will neutralize the negative energy stored in the stone and will direct it back to the earth.

Water does have a physical force, so be sure to only clean hard stones such as amethyst or quartz with this method.

You shouldn’t soak soft stones like turquoise and amber for a long time in water; it may damage their polish and shine.

This method is not recommended for necklaces or bracelets worked on silicone wire or textile cord to avoid its damage.

  • You can purify them by smoking with sage, laurel leaf or palo santo. Wave your stone over your smoke source for 20 to 30 seconds to clean it.

  • Sunlight and moonlight can charge and clean your gemstone.

The sun will supply a newly charged gemstone with yang solar energy that balances the stone’s natural yin energy that it receives from the earth during its creation. For stones that are susceptible to discoloration under the strong sun (such as amethyst, rose quartz or amber, you can put them out at dawn for an hour.

On the other side, moonlight is a more delicate (and non color-altering) method that is especially effective with a full moon. Because the moon is at its brightest and full potential when full, it can increase the stone’s vibrations.

For softer stones such as malachite or selenite, it’s recommended to use sunlight or moonlight rather than water.

  •  You can put the jewel in a bowl of raw brown rice and leave it for a few days (1-3 days), then throw away the rice; don't use it for another cleaning.

  • If you are in the mountains, you can wash your gemstones in a spring with clean water

  • Certain crystals and clusters (like quartz or amethyst) have the ability to absorb and regenerate other stones. One of the most popular cleansing crystals that can purify gemstones of their negativity is selenite.

Whichever method you’ll choose, gemstone cleaning doesn’t need to be a difficult thing. The thing to keep in mind when cleaning crystals is that it's your intention that matters the most. The vibration of a prayer that you say to the crystals matters and so does the gratitude you give them for protecting you.

If we start the purifying process with "thank you for protecting me" it is perfect. Then you can use smoking, water washes, essential oils, brown rice, natural light or another method that you vibrate with.
